Rheumatic foot

Rheumatism includes a large number of symptoms inside and around the joints or elsewhere in the musculoskeletal system.A rheumatic foot can therefore be a disease of the joints but also a disease of muscles or connective tissue.

It is remarkable that many forms of a rheumatic foot only start after the menopause. They occur more often in women than in men. In most forms, women are 2 to 3 times more affected than men. Only in Bechterew’s disease is it the other way round.

The largest group of people have either rheumatoid arthritis. Itis the Latin word for inflammation. This is therefore an inflammatory disease. It comes and goes. Inflammation causes redness, pain, warmth and swelling and restricts movement. In the past, one had to sit down and do nothing. This was called rheumatism. Now, after diagnosis by physical examination, blood test and X-ray, a person is immediately given medication to suppress the inflammation and thus prevent further damage to the joint.

Osteoarthritis is a degeneration (wear and tear) of the joint. People at an older (read: wise) age suffer from this. Opening a canning jar can be very painful.

Some forms of rheumatic diseases are:

  • Chronic joint rheumatism or R.A. (reumatoide arthitis ) of R.A.
  • Osteoarthritis ( joint wear)
  • Bechterew’s disease
  • Soft tissue rhemathism
  • Gout
  • Arthritis psoriasis

As a medical pedicurist and teacher, I specialize in the care of the rheumatic foot. As with the diabetes mellitus, it is often partially or fully reimbursed by supplementary health insurance. With regard to these patients, we keep a very close eye on the pressure points and friction spots on the foot and under the foot so that the client can walk comfortably and without any complications.

It is important for you to know that I have good contact with several chiropodists and podiatrists in Amsterdam and surroundings for possible referrals.
